ENGL 3290 Asian Caribbean Literature

4 hours; 4 credits

Survey of poetry and prose by Caribbean authors of Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern and mixed descent. Themes include brutality of plantation labor; struggle to retain Indian and Chinese cultural traditions; creolization and the emergence of syncretic African-Asian-European-Indigenous cultural forms; inter-ethnic violence and political instability; out-migration to Europe and North America; complexity of multiple diasporic identities. This course fulfills the requirement: Breadth and Depth Area Studies A: Race/Ethnicity or Empire/Post-Colonialism; or Breadth and Depth Area Studies B: Genre; Thematic Studies; Interdisciplinary Studies.

Prerequisite: English 1010 [1] or 1.7; Co-requisite: English 1012 [2] or 2.7
